The Mayor's Empty Promise on Sidewalks

Three years, eight hundred thousand dollars, and the same broken curb. We should stop pretending the program is working.

The Mayor's Empty Promise on Sidewalks

Three years ago the mayor stood on the same cracked curb I am standing on now and promised a sidewalk repair program that would "restore dignity to every block in this city."

Eight hundred thousand dollars later, the curb is still cracked. The program has repaired 41 sidewalks out of the 4,900 it listed as critical. At this rate, the last one gets fixed in the year 2247.

None of this is a secret. The quarterly reports are public. The problem is that no one in power has been held accountable for a promise measured in years and delivered in inches.

We don't need another ribbon-cutting for a repaired sidewalk in a photo-friendly ward. We need a program with a deadline, a number, and a name attached to it.
