About

Civic Ink is a reader-supported magazine of local democracy.

Investigations, news, opinion, and culture — published six times a year since 2014.

Civic Ink began in 2014 as a six-page newsletter printed on newsprint and folded by hand in a borrowed basement. Twelve years later it is still printed on newsprint, still folded by hand, and still answering the same question: what is actually happening in this city, and who is it happening to?

What we cover

We report on the machinery of civic life — budgets, zoning, transit, libraries, housing, and the public meetings where those decisions are made. Our investigations are built on public records and shoe leather. Our opinion pages are arguments with receipts.

How we work

We are independent: no corporate owners, no party affiliation, no paywalls on reporting that affects the public interest. Our revenue comes from subscribers, print sales, and readers like you. Corrections are published promptly and prominently, because a civic record is only as good as its accuracy.

Read, subscribe, write

Pick up the latest issue, subscribe to The Inkwell for a weekly letter, or send a tip to the city desk. We read everything.
